Scripture – Psalm 90:14: “Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.” (NRSV)
There is a movie that I have been waiting to see for more than two years. It was supposed to come out on April 13, 2018, but it kept getting pushed back and pushed back, and still has not been released. It is currently scheduled for August 28, 2020, but I do not think it is wise to go to a theater to see it, even if the theaters are opened. Despite my impatience, it is not worth putting myself or more importantly others at risk. I guess I will have to wait.
“Wait ‘til next year” has long been the hope of many. The Jews scattered across the world would say every Passover, “Next year in Jerusalem!” For Red Sox fans of many generations, the cry has been “wait ‘til next year”, which I think is especially appropriate this year. It seems like good things are just around the corner for us. We just have to wait and wait and wait.
In Psalm 90, we are reminded of the power of God’s eternity and majesty, and yet the psalmist cries, “Turn, O Lord! How long?” Waiting drains us after a while. He then says, “Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.” Thus, even when we are impatient, even when are waiting for trivial pleasures like movies, or for a return to “normal life,” or for justice denied generation after generation, we must remember that God will have compassion on us. When we pray in the morning, we have the strength to face the rest of the day, and can truly rejoice, no matter how long we have to wait.
Prayer – Grant me the patience to face my troubles and my fears with faith in your steadfast love. Amen.
